Traveler's Wheels GALLERY INDEX | NEXT TOOL | FEEDBACK Traveler wheels, tools of the wheelwright, have also been called tire runners, tire wheels, tire measurers, followers, or tracing wheels. The tool itself is a wheel mounted within a fork with a handle. These wheels, used in tire making, measured the length of iron bar required. Traveler wheels were made of wood, or metal, or a combination of the two. Using chalk marks as starting indicators, the traveler wheel was run around the tireless rim while counting the number of turns. Then the wheel was run alongside a metal bar for the same number of turns to indicate the length of metal needed to make the tire. Millwrights also used the traveler's wheel to fit iron hoops to a millstone. |
