Departmental InformationMission Statement The Department of English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts combines the liberal arts emphasis on arts and letters with the applied focus on use and practice appropriate to a polytechnic university. Our mission is to provide core curriculum courses in writing, public speaking, literature and the arts, as well as applied programs in technical and professional communication. All of our courses and degrees equip students with the analytic and communications skills needed to excel in a complex and technologically advanced world. As a Department offering degrees and certificates in applied liberal arts and communication, our mission is to provide programs of study that foster the ability to think creatively and analytically about information in its multiple modes and forms, the talent to develop the communicative context that gives information meaning, and the skill to present that meaning through effective media choices. Undergraduate students in bachelor’s programs prepare for careers in technical and professional communication including web design, professional writing, technical writing, and multimedia design. Graduate students in degree and certificate programs prepare for leadership roles in technical communication, ranging from information architecture to instructional systems design. Our department marks a nexus in the University where techne and logos meet by offering courses and programs of study that develop the technical and conceptual skills necessary for our students’ success in the workforce and in the community at large.
