 It took more than two thousand years and the best efforts of some of the most powerful intellects ever applied to mathematics to sort out the controversy generated by Euclid's Fifth Postulate.  The result of those efforts was the discovery of non-Euclidean geometries and with that, a revolution in the way people thought about space.
