Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in Math 1111 or placement by the MAT.

Text: Algebra and Trigonometry, by Stewart, Redlin and Watson

Chapters 1.5, 5.5, 7, 8, 9, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.6, 4.1

The TI-89 is the required calculator for this course. No other calculator will be allowed for use on tests or quizzes. Bring your calculator to class each day. On tests, for some the problems use of the calculator will be essential, but others you will be expected work with no calculator assistance at all. You will also find a protractor useful.

Course Objectives: A working knowledge of trigonometry, including identities, graphs, equation solving, law of sines, law of cosines, applications. Rational functions and their graphs, systems of equations.

Homework:  We will discuss questions about homework exercises at the beginning of class. You will be quizzed on the homework regularly.

Grading: There will be 4 regular exams worth 100 points each. The tentative dates for these exams are:

Monday, September 8, Friday, October 3, Tuesday, October 28, Tuesday, November 25.

You must contact me in a timely fashion (preferably by the day of the exam), by phone or email, if you need to arrange a make-up exam. Make-up exams will only be given at the discretion of the instructor, and with a valid excuse for the absence. There will be 12 or more quizzes. The quizzes are worth 10 points each, but only the best 10 will count. No make-up quizzes will be given. The Final exam is comprehensive and worth 150 points. Grades will be awarded based on percentage of total points as follows: 90% A, 80% B, 70% C, 60% D.

A grade of C or better is required for course credit. The last day to withdraw from the course with a W is October 9.

The Math Department conducts help sessions 2:00-4:00 PM Monday through Friday, beginning early in the semester. A copy of the Text is on reserve in the library.
