Text: A First Course in Abstract Algebra, 7th ed., by John Fraleigh,

Course Objectives: To develop a working knowledge of the elementary definitions, examples, and theorems of groups, rings, and fields. To develop proficiency in proof techniques. Introduction to transformation groups and symmetries of Euclidean space.

Homework: Homework will be assigned and collected regularly. You are expected to read the text and hand in homework that is your own work. Late homework will not be accepted. Assignments will be posted on the webpage.

Grading: Your grade for the course will be based on:

Homework and quiz scores (20%),
2 in-class exams (60%)
Final exam (20%). The percentages listed are approximate.
For your course grade, you need 90% for an A, 80% for a B, 70% for a C, 60% for a D.
The last day to withdraw from the course with a W is Tuesday, March 11.
