To earn a Minor in Mathematics, a student must complete Math 2255 and Math 3256 plus an additional 11 semester hours of Mathematics courses at the 2300 level or higher. At least six of these additional 11 hours must be at the 3000 level or higher.
Courses used to fill other requirements at SPSU (excluding core
areas A through E) may also be used to earn a minor in Mathematics. Math
2240 may not be used for the Minor.
Frequently Asked Questions The following is for general information
only. For more detailed and precise information consult the Southern Polytechnic
catalog or stop by the Mathematics Department in room D-113. We can also be reached
by phone at (678) 915-7235. Q: Why would anyone want to minor in Mathematics? A: It's a
great way to enhance your education, increase your set of skills, learn
interesting mathematics, and see how it's used in your field. From a
professional standpoint a Mathematics Minor can help your degree stand out to
prospective employers. It's also good preparation if you plan to take the
Engineer in Training exam. Q: How tough is getting a Mathematics Minor? A: It
depends to some extent upon how difficult you find Mathematics and the courses
you select. In general, however, you can expect to take some interesting upper
level Mathematics courses. The number of course hours required can be easily fit
into the elective structure of many degree programs. Q: What catalog should I look in for the
requirements of the minor? A: You may
use the Mathematics Minor requirements from any catalog that has been in effect
as long you have been continuously enrolled since that catalog was used.
"Continuously enrolled" means that you have not been unenrolled at
Southern Polytechnic for more than one term in a row. Incidentally, you may
choose the minor requirements from a different catalog than your major. Q: What are the current Mathematics Minor
requirements? A: For the
2000-2002 or 2002-2003 catalog: You must complete Math 3256
(or 3356)
and Math
2255. You must also complete an additional 11 hours of Mathematics courses at
the 2300 level or higher, with at least six of these hours at the 3000 level or
higher. Q: What are the requirements for earlier
catalogue years? A: For the
1998-1999 and 1999-2000 catalogs: You must complete Math 3256
(or 3356) and Math 2255. You must
also complete an additional 11 hours of Mathematics courses at the 2000 level or
higher, with at least nine of these hours at the 3000 level or higher. Before 1998 Southern Polytechnic was on the
quarter system so the situation is more complicated. Stop by the Mathematics
Office to talk with the Department Chair if you're interested in using one of these
catalogs. Q: Can courses count toward my major and minor at
the same time? A: For
most courses, yes. However, courses that count toward core Areas A-E cannot also
be used toward the minor. Generally speaking, Mathematics courses beyond the
level of Calculus II can simultaneously count toward a major and minor. For some
degrees the Mathematics they already require can bring you fairly close to the
Minor. Q: Can I use courses that I transferred into
Southern Polytechnic? A: Yes.
However, at least 6 semester hours of credit toward the minor must be completed
at Southern Polytechnic. Q: What are good courses to use toward the minor? A: That
depends a lot on your interests and your major. The projected
offerings and
upper level course descriptions can give you some idea of the possibilities. You
may want to talk with your major advisor and/or Mathematics faculty as well. Q: How do I know when courses are going to be
offered? A: Our
"to be offered" list is our best
guess right now of when courses will be placed on the schedule. Note that
several upper level Mathematics courses are typically offered only once a year.
Please be aware that the list is only a guess and circumstances can make
alterations necessary. Q: Can I come back after graduating and earn a
minor? A: No. The
minor must be earned and received at the same time you receive your degree. Q: How do I convert quarter math courses and
hours to semesters or vice versa? A: This
can be a bit involved. If you have a mixture of quarter and semester credits to
use toward the Mathematics Minor you should stop by the Mathematics Office to
talk with the Department Chair. Q: Do I need to declare my Minor via some form? A: The
only form you need to declare your minor on is your petition to graduate. This
petition must be submitted very early in the semester before the semester you
intend to graduate. Your major office can give you more information about it. In
addition to information about the degree you're seeking, there is a line on the
form on which to state your minor and the catalog you are using for it. Q: Do I need to have an advisor in the Mathematics
Department if I'm pursuing a Math Minor? A: No, a
designated advisor is unnecessary. However, if you're unsure of anything about
the minor, such as what courses to take or when they'll be offered, it is a good
idea to stop by the Mathematics Department to talk to the Department Chair. Q: Does my minor appear on my transcript and
diploma? A: It
doesn't appear on your diploma, but it is listed on your transcript. Projected offerings for Mathematics
