Gamblers, Drunkards, and Osmosis: An Introduction to Markov Chains

Professor Steven Edwards
Southern Polytechnic State University

Gambling houses usually do a good job of separating people from their money. In the process of osmosis, particles that are originally separated get all mixed up, and usually don't get separated out. Both of these situations can be modeled by Markov Chains. In this talk, we will try to illuminate the similarities of these two processes. We will also give other fascinating examples of the many uses of Markov Chains in science and sociology.
