Mathematics Department

The Mathematics Department offers the B.S. and B.A. in Mathematics and a Minor in Mathematics for students with other majors. The department also supports double major programs allowing students to receive a major in both mathematics and another subject. The department provides service courses in support of other degrees at Southern Polytechnic.

Currently, about thirty-five  students are enrolled as Math majors. Graduates from the department are employed in business and industry or are enrolled in post-graduate studies.

The Department has twelve regular  full-time faculty members, all of whom hold a doctorate. Most classes are taught by full-time faculty. The Department tries to keep classes relatively small; most range in size from 25 to 30, and many are smaller. The Department operates a help session during the academic year for subjects at the level of calculus or above.

Service classes are offered in multiple sections both day and night every semester. Every class listed in the catalog is offered at least once each year. Every class is offered in the evenings at least once every three years, and it is possible to earn the B.S. or B.A. in Mathematics by attending evening classes only. Most service courses are offered during the Summer semester as well as during the regular academic year.

Southern Polytechnic accepts transfer credit from colleges and universities accredited by the regional associations. Every student new to Southern Polytechnic without transfer credit for Calculus is asked to take a placement test, and the test is used to place each student in the appropriate mathematics class. Students often exempt courses on the basis of the placement test. Credit is awarded for successful completion of the Advanced Placement tests in calculus and for proficiency demonstrated on the CLEP test. High school students may be enrolled in Southern Polytechnic mathematics courses under the Joint Enrollment program.
