2. Institutional Review Board P&P (no number), May 2003

2.1 The Senate approved the Institutional Review Board P&P with the following amendments made at the 19 October 2004 Senate meeting:

2.1.1 Under Background, after “This P&P provides the charge for the Institutional Review Board. (IRB)” add “It is the responsibility of the principal investigator, employee, or agent to initiate and follow the procedures described below to ensure the safety and rights of the human and animal participants.”

2.1.2 Under Goals, after “The Southern Polytechnic State University Institutional Review Board (SPSU-IRB), reviews for approval and monitors for progress all research protocols” insert “and instructional experimentation.”

2.1.3 Under Submission Process, after Incomplete applications will be returned without review.” add “Note: Grant applications require this approval prior to submission.

2.2 The Senate also approved the amended Institutional Review Board application form “Application for the Use of Animal and Human Subjects in Research.”

3.  Student Life Committee P&P 203.06

4. Updates from Subcommittee Chairs

4.1 Senator Thain, chair of Subcommittee 3, promised to present some P&P drafts at the next Senate meeting.  On the horizon for his subcommittee, the Faculty Senate P&P.

5. Discussion of Summer Term

Interim VPAA Hornbeck, speaking on plans for the upcoming summer term, made it clear that Summer 2005 faculty salaries must come from the FY2006 budget, which is anticipated to be less than the current budget. If the faculty pay rate is to remain the same as summer 2004, then the minimum class sizes for cancellations and for full compensation would have to be increased for summer 2005 if we are to approach a true “break-even” point.

The meeting adjourned at 12:54.

The next Senate meeting will be Tuesday 16 November 2004 in J152.
