Faculty
Administrative Information
Advising
Policy
All Management Program
students (graduate, post-baccalaureate, and undergraduate) must obtain
academic advisement each semester before they are allowed to register.
Academic advisement is accomplished by any member of the Management Program
faculty, and such advisement may be done at any time during the semester.
Management Program faculty select specific blocks of time for carrying
out formally scheduled Academic Advisement midway through each semester
and on Registration Day. Entering graduate students are academically advised
at a formal evening orientation session which is held on Registration
Day.
All students have
an assigned advisor who is a member of the faculty in the Management Program.
Students are encouraged each semester to communicate with their advisor
in person, by e-mail, using fax, via telephone or voice mail messages
so the need for advisement will not become a critical item during the
student’s academic experience. After the student has been assigned an
advisor, their advisor is responsible for maintaining records regarding
their advisement. Each faculty will be required to document the effectiveness
of their advisement during their annual evaluation.
Faculty members of
the Management Program will receive training and instruction in advising
procedures in one or more faculty meetings during the Fall semester, designated
exclusively for that purpose.
All relevant curricula
by catalog date are posted to the Management Program home page, so that
the faculty can have access to curricula information when they are advising.

Course Description: This course provides variable credit
up to 3 semester hours and is intended to cover topics of special interest
to students. Students must adhere to the following guidelines in order
to receive credit for successful completion of a special topic course.
Guidelines for Special Topics
Prior to the end of advance registration for the semester, the student
must submit a one or two page outline explaining the nature, objective,
and scope of the proposed special topic course. The faculty will evaluate
the outline, determine if the proposal will result in an enhanced learning
experience for the student, and assure that the area of study is within
the scope of knowledge for the degree sought. If the evaluation is favorable,
then a primary faculty advisor will be assigned.
The advisor must specify
what is expected of the student. The requirements must be detailed and
signed by both parties. A copy of the agreement must be filed in the office
of the Program Head.
The advisor and student
must agree on progress meetings in which evidence of effort is provided,
e.g., outline, reading list, etc. The advisor must document all meetings
and student’s performance relative to the stated objectives.
The effort and time
expended on the project must be equivalent to taking a regular course.
The scope of the project
may include one or more of the following options:
Formal paper.
Directed research.
Designed course (not currently offered).
Annotated bibliography.
Assigned readings (with examinations).
Case study.
Formal presentation.
Anything else with permission of the advisor.
If a formal paper is expected at the end of the project, the paper must
identify and deal with the following issues.
Introduction/preface dealing with social, economic, legal, organizational,
and political environments typical for this industry/business.
Objective(s) of the paper.
Problem identification.
Analysis/evaluation.
Alternatives/options available.
Solutions and recommendations.
References, bibliography, reading list.
