1998 - 1999 MSM Curriculum

Accreditation standards require that all students being awarded the Master of Science degree in Management satisfy the Common Body of Knowledge (CBK). This requirement may be satisfied by completing undergraduate courses in the following subject areas. Applicants who have earned college credit for courses such as these will be considered to have satisfied the CBK for that area. The requirement to complete the degree will be 36 semester hours.

MGNT 6001 Management Communications Effective communication skills are essential for managers in high technology environments. This course will emphasize skill building in writing, oral presentations, interpersonal communication, and research. 3-0-3
MGNT 6005 Managerial Economics
Prerequisite: MGNT 3505 or equivalent
Managerial economics focuses heavily on applied microeconomics issues. At its core is a value maximizing objective for the firm. Included in the course work will be traditional topics associated with microeconomics. Analysis of demand, production, cost, market structure, pricing and capital budgeting. 3-0-3
MGNT 6015 Technology and Innovation Management
Prerequisite: MGNT 3105 or equivalent
This course emphasizes innovation and creativity, and evaluation and analysis of new technology. The objective is to learn how to evaluate new technologies (either hard or soft) in order to be able to determinate the whether or not to make a significant investments in them. 3-0-3
MGNT 6025 Managing Technical Professionals
Prerequisite: MGNT 3105 or equivalent

This course examines the working relationship between management and professional employees in high technology organizations. Using management theory as a foundation, the course emphasizes experiential learning in order to develop effective leadership and team building skills which students can apply immediately. Learning methods include case studies, team exercises, role playing, individual and group presentation, experiential and group discussions. 3-0-3
MGNT 6030 Decision Making Techniques
Prerequisites: MGNT 3125, MGNT 6005

This course provides a series of quantitative and analytical tools that will enable a student to make informed decisions about business problems. The focus will be on developing analytical models to characterize and solve management problems. 3-0-3

Prerequisite: MGNT 3505, MGNT 4151 or equivalent
An introduction to management of operations in the manufacturing and service sectors. Topics include operations strategy, global issues in manufacturing and services, and manufacturing planning and control systems. Particular attention will be paid to understanding the nature of problems unique to the production and service environments. 3-0-3

Prerequisite: MGN 3-0-3 MGNT 6040 - Current Readings in Management of Technology
This course will examine how technology impacts public issues. The content of the course will be based on the issues currently of concern and will range from ecology to health care to telecommunications. 3-0-3
MGNT 6045 Management of Information Technology
Prerequisite: MGNT 5055 or equivalent

A comprehensive study of the application of information technology within organizations. Includes focus on data generation, retrieval, analysis, and utilization in managing and decision-making activities. 3-0-3
MGNT 6050 Project Management
Prerequisites: MGNT 3105, MGNT 3505 or equivalent
A study of the project planning, organizing, control concepts and techniques. Coverage will include projects and specifications. Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) the Critical Path Method (CPM), the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), Gantt charting, and time/resource management. 3-0-3
MGNT 6055 Total Quality Management
Prerequisite: MGNT 3105
The concepts of TQM will develop leadership and interpersonal skills along with an understanding of planning and customer, satisfaction, in addition to process analysis. The discussion will focus on quality and how to use project teams, such as selecting a project and choosing team members. Topics will be covered concerning setting up meetings and guidelines for productive meetings. Team aspects and team building and activities will also be discussed. 3-0-3
MGNT 6060 Entrepreneurship
Prerequisites: MGNT 3105, MGNT 3125, MGNT 3135 or equivalent, MGNT 6005
This course addresses the management challenges associated with starting and successfully running a new venture. It provides students with an opportunity to apply the theories and tools that they have learned elsewhere in the curriculum to the venture creation process. 3-0-3
MGNT 6065 Issues in International Management
Prerequisites: MGNT 3105, MGNT 3125, MGNT 3135 or equivalent, MGNT 6005
This course deals with cultural, institutional, economic, and financial environments characteristic of international markets. It will focus on strategic and operational plans that managers must undertake in formulating international business activities. 3-0-3
MGNT 6070 Employment and Labor Relations
Prerequisite: MGNT 3105 or equivalent
This course will cover employment practices and employment law in unionized and non-unionized settings. The focus will be on decision making and administrative issues for managers. 3-0-3
MGNT 6075 Management Science
Prerequisite: MGNT 3105
This course provides a frame of reference for using models in support of decision making in an enterprise, then introduces some of the most commonly useful modeling approaches and principles. Topics covered include model components, deterministic simulation, time series and causal forecasting, decision analysis, and Monte Carlo simulation. The course emphasizes hands-on application of the techniques using commonly available software. 3-0-3
MGNT 6090 Strategic Management
Prerequisites: MGNT core courses
Exposes the student to the process of strategic decision-making. Emphasis is placed on the use of SWOT analyses in development of the strategic plan and the determination of the long-term character of the enterprise. Cases will be analyzed, and classroom presentations will be made by distinguished industrial executives and leaders. 3-0-3

The purpose of marketing research is to generate information to improve decision making. This course focuses on determining when research should be conducted and designing the appropriate means for gathering and interpreting information. The course examines issues from the perspective of both the manager and the researcher by relying on extensive readings, cases and assignments. 3-0-3
MKTG 6015 Buyer Behavior
Prerequisite: MGNT 3135
This course provides an opportunity for study of the behavior of buyers of business-to-business and consumer goods and services. Objectives include (1) increasing the student’s understanding of buyers and their behavior and (2) providing the student with experience in applying this knowledge in marketing management decisions. Topics such as life style analysis, organization, individual and family decision making, consumerism, behavioral models, attitude formation and change, information seeking, and market segmentation will be explored using readings, projects and case materials. 3-0-3
MKTG 6025 Database Marketing
Prerequisite: MGNT 3135
This course provides the student with the application of database management to the challenges of relationship marketing. Students will receive training on software using a business database such as ACCESS. They will then apply the information from analysis of the database to design a relationship marketing plan. 3-0-3
MKTG 6030 International Marketing
Prerequisite: MGNT 3135
A study of the management challenges of marketing in foreign countries. Topics include the assessment of foreign markets, foreign customer requirements, entry strategies, foreign management, promoting internationally, transfer pricing and world-class quality. 3-0-3
OPSM 6005 Operations and Decision Management, I
Prerequisites: MGNT 4151

A survey of production/operations management. Topics include quality control and improvement, project management, forecasting, production planning, scheduling, material requirements and capacity planning, inventory management, just-in-time/total quality management, international operations and strategic considerations. 3-0-3
OPSM 6006 Operations and Decision Management, II
Prerequisites: MGNT 4151, OPSM 6005
This course is a continuation of OPSM 6005 - Operations and Decision Management, I with a focus on comparative manufacturing systems. The course analyzes modern production systems (job shops, FMSs, etc.) and control/operating policies (push vs. pull, JIT, Kanban, etc.) and discusses their applicability to various competitive environments. 3-0-3
OPSM 6025 Purchasing Management
Prerequisite: MGNT 3145, MGNT 4151
Study of the activities, responsibilities, relationships and system involved in the purchase of materials, services and capital equipment. Topics include identifying requirements; evaluating in selecting "best value" vendors; techniques for planning and executing the purchasing function, including fundamentals of negotiating, ethical and legal aspects of purchasing; interactions with the engineering, quality, manufacturing, materials management, transportation and legal functions and with suppliers; and international aspects of purchasing. Purchasing’s responsibility for quality, delivery, inventory, price and contribution to profit also are covered. 3-0-3
